Rear Admiral ASM Baten has been appointed as the first vice-chancellor (VC) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, reports UNB.
The government also appointed Commodore Khandaker Towfiquzzaman as the first registrar and Commodore ANA Rezaul Haque the first treasure of the university.
The Education Ministry Sunday issued three separate circulars about these appointments.
The newly-appointed VC, registrar and treasurer will serve the country's first maritime university for next four years.
The government took an initiative last year to set up a maritime university. Parliament on October 23 last year passed the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University Bill-2013. The President gave assent to the bill on October 26 last.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, second such university in South Asia, has been set up on 35 acres of land on the Bangladesh Marine Academy Campus at Anwara Upazila in Chittagong district.
The university has been set up to provide graduate and post graduate degrees in all new branches of maritime related issues including safe vessel operation management and administration, river engineering and technology, oceanography, shipbuilding engineering, and carrying out research.
