Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said on Wednesday the government is preparing a master plan for ensuring accommodation for 20,000 government officials in the city's Azimpur and Motijheel areas, reports BSS.
"Apart from addressing accommodation problems, we are taking initiatives to make other civic amenities available for public officials in these areas," he said.
The minister made the comments while speaking at a function arranged for newly recruited officials (public works) at the ministry, an official release said.
Public Works Department chief engineer Md Rafiqul Islam and National Housing Authority chairman Reshedul Islam, among others, spoke at the function with Housing and Public Works secretary Md Shahid Ullah Khandakar in the chair.
At present, Mosharraf said, about eight per cent of the government officials are getting accommodation facilities, but the government has a plan to bring 40 per cent of them under this scheme.
"The Public Works Department has now become a modern agency after it took various initiatives for enhancing skill of its officials. The department has a capacity to build high-rise residential buildings for government officials," he said.
