Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Maya Thursday said the government is working to minimise disaster risks apart from launching relief programmes in post-disaster situations, reports UNB.
He made this remark while addressing a function in the city marking the National Disaster Preparedness Day 2014.
The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief arranged the discussion marking the day. This year, the theme of the day is 'Disaster has no timetable; we'll remain prepared all the time.'
Maya said about 0.3 million people were killed in a cyclone that hit the country's coastal region in 1970 due to lack of awareness and disaster management while only 190 people were killed in a cyclone of same intensity -Aila--in 2009 for proper management of disaster and raising awareness of people.
He said the disasters frequently come without alarm so people should take preparation to cope with disasters.
The Disaster Management Minister said the government's long-term philosophy in disaster management is to restrict the sufferings of poor people within a tolerable level from all natural, environmental and human-induced disasters.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikder, BRAC University vice-chancellor Dr Ainun Nishat, PKSF chairman Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad and Disaster Management secretary Mesbaul Ul Alam, among others, spoke at the discussion.
