Mirsarai train accident: investigation begins

CHITTAGONG, Oct 17 (BSS): The three-member high-powered committee led by Shafijuddin Ahmed, Joint Secretary of the Communications Ministry, started investigation to find out the cause and identify the persons responsible for the October 13 train derailment at Barotakiya in Mirsarai Upazila here.
Three passengers were killed and at least 40 others injured when five bogies out of 16 of the Dhaka-bound Mohanagar-Probhati intercity train derailed near the Barotakiya station Saturday morning. The train was carrying nearly 1,200 passengers, mostly home-goers, on the eve of holy Eid-ul-Fitr.
The committee was formed at the directive of Communications Adviser MA Matin, who along with the high officials of the ministry and the Bangladesh Railway (BR), visited the spot on the day of the accident.
The committee members visited the spot this morning and recorded the statements of the eyewitnesses, BR sources said.
The committee is also scheduled to stay one more day here and talk to the BR employees concerned and under-treatment passengers.
Meanwhile, two other probe committees - one is consisting of four members headed by Chief Operating Superintendent of BR Eastern Zone Abdul Wahab and another is five members led by Divisional Transportation Officer of BR Eastern Zone Maksudul Arefeen - have been working simultaneously to probe the accident, the sources said.
