Mobile court fines 2 shops at Dhanmondi

A mobile court fined two shops in the city's Dhanmondi area Tuesday for violating anti-tobacco law by displaying cigarette advertisements.

The mobile court, run by executive magistrate of Deputy Commissioner (DC) office of Dhaka Md. Shawakat Ali, fined Tk 65,000 to the shops.

All the cigarette advertising and promotional materials were also removed from the shops and destroyed.

Zarurirah Shop on Satmasjid Road, Dhanmondi was fined Tk 50,000 for violating the tobacco control law by displaying various ads of a cigarette brand.

The shop manager was arrested for two months due to his inability to pay the fine. Later, he was released after submitting the fined amount.  

Besides, Dynamic Food Corner beside Dhanmondi Lake was fined Tk 15,000 for displaying cigarette promotional materials.

During the mobile court's operation, Nazmul Hossain Khan, inspector of Narcotics Department, Shamul Haque and Matiur Rahman, sub-inspector of Dhanmondi Police Station, Syeda Anonna Rahman, national advocacy officer of Work for a Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust, and Mir Abdur Razzak, executive director of Social Advancement Forum (SAF), were present.
