Model Meghna shown arrested in fraud case

A Dhaka court has showed arrested model Meghna Alam in a case filed with the capital's Dhanmandi Police Station over fraud with a foreign diplomat by luring him into a romantic trap, report agencies.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Miah passed the order on Thursday as police produced Meghna before the court and the prosecution sought to have her formally shown arrested in the case. Following the court's approval, she was sent back to jail.

Model Meghna Alam, winner of Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020, was arrested from her Basundhara Residential Area flat on April 9. She was subsequently placed under a 30-day detention order, under the Special Powers Act.

The High Court, however, on April 13 issued a rule, asking the relevant authorities to explain within two weeks why her 30-day detention under the Special Powers Act should not be declared beyond legal jurisdiction.

However, Meghna Alam told the court that her only 'romantic relationship' was with Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Dhaka Essa Yousef Essa Al Duhailan.

She claimed, "I was married to Saudi Ambassador Essa. Essa alleges that I have spoilt his child. It is not true. I spoke to Essa about this. I asked him to refrain from spreading such information."
