The Ministry of Education (MoE) formed on Monday an eight-member high-powered probe committee headed by local lawmaker Kazi Firoz Rashid to recover the Jagannath University (JnU) dormitories, which are allegedly under the illegal occupation.
In the face of month-long protest from the university students and teachers, the ministry formed the committee at an emergency meeting presided over by Education Minster Nurul Islam Nahid at the secretariat on the day.
Other members of the committee are: Additional secretary of MoE, additional secretary of the home ministry, joint secretary of the home ministry, Dhaka deputy commissioner, president and secretary of the JnU Teachers' Association and treasurer of the university.
The committee was asked to submit its report containing details about the recovery of the allegedly occupied halls of the university by 30 days. The committee was also asked to provide necessary recommendations regarding the issue.
Besides, the meeting has suggested the university authorities to form another committee to acquire necessary land for expansion of the existing university campus to the nearby areas.
The meeting also strongly directed the authorities concerned to complete the ongoing development works of the university including construction of the academic and residential halls.
Mr Nahid also called upon the protesting students and teachers to put an end to the ongoing movement and back to the classroom. "Please, go back to the classroom as the government has taken the 'issu' seriously", he requested.
Meanwhile, the agitating students and teachers vowed to continue their movement until recovery of the university's dormitories and withdrawal of Lalbagh DC Harun-ur-Rashid and Kotawali thana Officer -in- Charge Mohammad Moniruzzaman for their alleged involvement in an attack on the students leaving at 20 protestors injured.
Yasin Ahmed, a masters' student of the university said the agitating students and teachers under the banner of 'Hall Uddhar Sangram Parishad' blocked the Royshaheb Bazar intersection in the capital for one and a half-hours from 11:30am that created severe tailback on the link roads.
Later on they formed a human chain on the university campus and announced a fresh agitation programme -- 'sit-in' Tuesday in front of Sadar Ghat Branch of the Bangladesh Bank demanding immediate removal of the branch office from the campus.
Member Secretary of the Parishad Sirajul Islam at the programme also urged the bank's officials and staffs to avoid their attendance Tuesday to avert any untoward occurrences during the protest.
