The ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW) has sought an additional allocation of Tk 6.5 billion from the ministry of finance (MoF) to meet its expenditures, officials said.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim, MP has recently sent a letter to Finance Minister AMA Muhith, seeking the funds.
"The construction of new hospitals has expanded widely and the number of beds in the existing hospitals has sharply increased across the country. The budgetary allocation under the medium budgetary framework (MTBF) is insufficient for completion of the ongoing activities," the health minister said in the letter.
"The dues of the hospitals being run under non-development budget are on the rise due to lack of adequate budget, hampering healthcare service for the patients," the letter reads.
Under MTBF, the government has allocated Tk 74.41 billion in the budget for the next fiscal year (FY). An extra allocation of Tk 6.50 billion will be needed for staff wages and allowances, repair work, maintenance and procurement purposes, the letter said.
The public hospitals have added some 13,262 more beds in the current fiscal year (FY). Besides, 500-bed Kurmitola General Hospital and 500-bed Mugda General Hospital have already started functioning, sources said.
Over 585 medical colleges, specialised hospitals and district and upazila hospitals under the MoHFW are operating across the country, they added.
The number of patients is increasing in these hospitals day by day. Now it is not possible for these hospitals to provide the patients with proper treatment due to lack of modern medical equipment, the sources added.
