The prison authority has appealed for raising the number of prison guards as it is struggling to control some 80,000 prisoners all over the country with limited manpower, officials said.
The prison authority submitted a prayer to the home ministry last year seeking to double the number of prison guards.
The country has a total of 8,460 prison guards against about 80,000 prisoners, Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Golam Hayder told the FE.
"Even some of the posts are still vacant," he said.
The DIG (Prisons) said the home ministry recently assured them of taking immediate measures in response to the appeal.
Mr. Hayder said at least 3,000 prison guards would be needed at the under-construction central prison in Keraniganj. "Now it (recruitment of guards) becomes a demand of the hour," he added.
Another senior prison official said it would be very tough for them to control the prisoners unless the government raises the number of prison guards at least by more than double. "The government should take faster move in this regard," he added.
Quoting an official of the home ministry, he said the ministry is considering the matter seriously and the number of guards would be raised significantly in phases in the coming days, as it needs a big budget.
