CHITTAGONG, Apr 9: The employees, staff nurses and officials of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) today brought out a procession urging the government to backtrack from turning the hospital into University.
The staff nurses and employees observed strike today protesting the move and urged the government to keep away from making the hospital an autonomous organisation because it will not only hamper the interest of the employees but also put the patients in a condition to pay exorbitant price for treatment which they are now getting free of cost.
"The Prime Minister often speaks for reaching health services to the doorsteps of the people. So she cannot take such decision. We are sure that the bureaucrats have biased her to take such a destructive policy of turning the CMCH into a university," said Romana Aktar, president of Chittagong Medical College Hospital Employees' Association.
"We don't have any objection to medical university. But that should be established at a separate place outside the medical college hospital for the sake of the patients," she said.
It may be mentioned that the Health Minister has recently announced the CMCH to turn into a university. It is learnt that the bill has been passed in the cabinet with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
