Myanmar border police release five abducted Bangladeshi fishermen

COX'S BAZAR, Feb 3: Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) released abducted five Bangladeshi fishermen and handed them over to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials on Saturday, sources said.

Released fishermen are identified as Aziz Ullah, Yar Mohammad, Shah Alam, Mohammad Rafiq and Pedan Ali. They hail from Hoaikkong union under Teknaf upazila.

According to sources, six Bangladeshi fishermen went to the Naf river to catch fish in the early morning of Saturday. All of a sudden a group of BGP members opened fire on them. Nurul Islam (35) sustained bullet-injury but managed to swim ashore to the bank of the Naf river. He was admitted to the MSF hospital in the Kutupalong area under Ukhia upazila.

After firing, BGP men abducted five fishermen and took them to Mongdaw township. On information, officials of BGB in Teknaf sent a letter to the BGP authority. After daylong discussion they handed the fishermen over to BGB on Saturday afternoon.

Battalion Commander of BGB-2 in Teknaf Lt Col Ariful Islam confirmed the matter.
