Nagar Paribahan, metro rail services to be coordinated: DSCC mayor

FE REPORT | August 25, 2022 00:00:00

Services of Dhaka Nagar Paribhan (Dhaka city bus transport) and that of metro rail will be coordinated to ensure quality services for the commuters, said Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Wednesday.

"Shahbagh is one of the busiest and crowded spots in Dhaka. Passengers would get benefits if (we) ensure coordinated services between Dhaka Nagar Paribhan and metro rail," he told the media.

The DSCC mayor was talking with journalists while inspecting two places selected for bus stoppage under Bus Route Rationalisation progrmme adjacent to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the capital's Shahbagh.

"There will be two places in Shahbagh for passengers of metro rail to get down. If the metro rail passengers opt to avail Nabar Paribagan services, then they will get a quality service there, he stated.

Affirming that problem will not arise in providing coordinated services of the two different modes of transports, he said once the construction work of the metro rail is ended, two bus stands with each having passengers' sheds will be built at Shahbagh. Besides sufficient spaces will be there to be used by the commuters who would walk to catch a Nagar Paribahan bus after getting down from the overhead rail station or a bus passenger reaching there to avail the bus service only, he said.

Mr Taposh also said that there will be one lane dedicated only for bus passengers with the view to facilitating their uninterrupted and smooth travel to their respective destinations.

"So there will be two passengers' sheds on both sides (east and west) of the road in Shahbagh to facilitate movement of passengers," he said acknowledging that some more times are required to complete construction of the two passengers' sheds there.

Replying to a query from a reporter he said that the DSCC has issued a circular regarding the daily closure time of shops, markets, shopping malls, restaurants and other commercial entities to bring order to the activities of the mega city.

"(Daily activities) of many cities in the world are run within a stipulated timeline. So, we would like to see that Dhaka city functions under certain schedule of time," he said asserting that shops, markets, shopping malls, restaurants and other entities must follow daily closure time as per the schedule from September 1 next.

Earlier, the DSCC issued a mass circular on August 22 in line with the decision taken by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on June 6 last to shut shops, markets, shopping malls, restaurants and other establishments by 8:00pm everyday aiming to save power due to the price hike of fuel oil in the international; market.

Similarly hotels, restaurants and food shops have to be shut by 10:00pm while food parcel activity would continue until 11:00 pm, the circular said.
