Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid at a regional conference held in Bangkok stressed the need for increasing allocation for the education sector in accordance with the increased size of the national budget.
The three-day event styled 'Asia-Pacific Regional Education Conference (APREC)' which concluded Friday was jointly organised by UNESCO, UNICEF Bangkok and Ministry of Education Thailand, a media release of the Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO (BNCU) said on the day.
The education minister headed the Bangladeshi team. Other members of the team are ATM Zakir Hossain, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Mohammad Sohailuzzaman of BNCU, Dr Manzoor Ahmed and Md Shafiqul Islam of BRAC, KM Enamul Haque from CAMPE, Muntassim Tanvir and Khaled Mahmood from ActionAid, Quazi Faruque Ahmed from Education Watch, Mahfuza Khanam and Mohammed Jahangir from College-University Teachers' Association.
Mr Nahid also underscored the need for incorporating early childhood care and education (ECCE) in the post-2015 agenda because of their proven strong influence on later learning, juvenile behaviour and adult life.
He opted for decentralisation of the educational administration to the upazila or sub-district level and implementation of universal quality primary education, maintaining set standards for pupils, teachers and the schools, and involvement of communities and civil society.
Mr Nahid said these issues should be the subjects of dialogue involving government and major stakeholders, and the dialogue will continue on these ideas and suggestions which will result in a common national position.
He commented that there is an opportunity for the sub-region of South Asia within the Asia-Pacific Region to articulate policy objectives, goals and strategies for the post-2015 education agenda.
The countries of South Asia may share common historical development and socio-economic context and similar educational development challenges.
The governments themselves and UNESCO, and UNICEF can support such exchange. Sub-regional bodies such as the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) can be a useful platform for the purpose.
He also remarked that big changes, reforms and successes have been achieved for the first time in the history of Bangladesh and it is recognised as well as appreciated by the world community.
