Naogaon farmers benefiting from early bean farming

NAOGAON, Sept 21: Peasants of Naogaon Sadar Upazila are benefitting from the early bean farming as they are getting handsome profit from the cultivation.

Growers cultivated the early variety of bean in last mid May to June and some of them are now busy harvesting the popular vegetable.

In the district's retail markets, per kg of bean is selling at Tk 100 to Tk 110.

Sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said at least 300 hectares of land have been brought under bean cultivation in Sadar upazila this season.

Farmers cultivated Kartika, Kajla, Chalta and Vadra varities of bean this year, the sources added.

One Azizar Mondal of Jhikra village under the upazila said he cultivated Vadra variety of bean on 14 decimals of land this year.

""I am expecting to start harvest within next six to seven days and sell the produce at Tk 3,500 to Tk 4,000 per maund", he added.

Farmer Nasir Uddin said he had to spray pesticides on the bean plans after they were under pest attack.

But, overall the production is satisfactory and the earning from the cultivation seems good as well, he added.

AKM Mafidul Islam, Sadar upazila agriculture officer said early bean farming is gaining popularity among the peasants in the area thanks to its growing demand and excellent price in the market.

The DAE officials were there with the farmers from beginning of the cultivation with necessary suggestions and support and they will be with the growers till completion of the harvest, Mr Islam added.
