The nation celebrated Sunday the 115th birth anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. Marking the occasion, various programmes were observed in the capital and elsewhere in the country, including educational institutions, reports BSS.
The programmes included placing wreaths at the grave of the poet on Dhaka University campus, holding discussion meetings and cultural functions.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith inaugurated the main programme of the day on Darirampur High School ground in Trishal of Mymensigh. Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor presided over the inaugural function of the three-day programme.
Religious Affairs Minister Principal Matiur Rahman, Cultural Affairs Secretary Dr. Ranajit Kumar Biswas, Poet Muhammad Nurul Huda and Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner Mustakim Billah Faruqui also addressed the function.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, the finance minister said Poet Nazrul Islam had inspired the people to be vocal against man-made disparities in society.
He said the extraordinary creations of Nazrul have enriched the Bengali literature.
He called upon all to build a prosperous country following the ideals of poet Nazrul Islam. In the morning, the cultural affairs minister placed wreaths at the poet's grave at Dhaka University.
