NBR joins hands with university students for research, innovation

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem, committed on Thursday to collaborate with the country's universities on research and innovation, as the revenue board's limited capabilities to this end.

Dhaka University (DU) students could contribute to the research and innovation for the NBR, he said while addressing at an 'Innovation Showcasing' programme organized by NBR at its premises.

Professor Dr ASM Maksud Kamal, vice chancellor of the DU attended the programme as chief guest.

Director General of the Research and Statistics wing of NBR, Ismail Hossain Siraji, delivered welcome speech and First Secretary (customs) of NBR, Dr Md Neyamul Islam, also an office secretary of the innovation committee, presented a key note paper at the programme.

Syed Mohammad Daud, member (tax administration and human resource management), Md Masud Sadiq, member (Customs policy) were special guests.

Speaking at the programme, the DU VC also expressed his willingness to join hands with NBR so that university students could contribute to revenue board's automation move.

He said Bangladesh has one of the lowest investments in research and development (R&D) and didn't have any presence in UNESCO ranking list.

Professor Kamal said collaboration between industries and university students was important too.

He said the gold theft incidence of customs and reserve hacking of the Bangladesh Bank could be prevented if the government laid more focus on automation of the entities.

Welcoming the NBR's step to contribute in R&D, he said the country's image has been tarnished internally due to such incidences. The DU VC suggested imposing tax for e-commerce businesses and content developers to boost up domestic revenue mobilisation.
