A four-year-long new project, 'Shomotay Tarunno: Youth for Equality' will be launched soon to address negative gender stereotypes and promote gender equality in Bangladesh.

The Netherlands will support the project, according to a Plan International Bangladesh (PIB) statement.

Negative gender stereotypes hinder equality between women, men and gender-diverse people in the country.

The Dutch embassy in Bangladesh handed over the grant decision letter to Plan International Bangladesh and Jaago Foundation at an event on Tuesday.

Thijs Woudstra, charge d'affaires of the Netherlands Embassy, Jolly Nur Haque, Director of program development and learning at Plan International Bangladesh, and Korvi Rakshand, executive director of Jaago Foundation, among others, were present at the event.

Shomotay Tarunno will follow a youth-centered and media-focused approach where young people in all their diversities will be supported to exercise and promote equal rights safely.

Media in all its perspectives would be involved in rendering a positive twist to gender norm projection to create awareness among the mass population, the statement said.

The project was engrained in the four Rs of feminist principles and would contribute to rights, representation, resources and reality checks, it said

Youth and community members will ensure that the project activities are implemented in the most appropriate way to the local context.

The media and marketing play an important role in the socialization of gender norms among citizens. However, the media sometimes misrepresents reality or girls, women and gender diverse population of the country, it claimed.
