21 DU students stuck
in flood-hit Sunamganj
Some 21 students of Dhaka University (DU) have been trapped by floods at a restaurant in Tanguar Haor in Sunamganj district. Running out of water and food on Friday they called out for immediate rescue. Three days ago the students went to Tanguar Haor in Sunamganj on an excursion.They took refuge at Pansi restaurant when the flood situation of the district turned serious on Thursday. Nineteen of the stranded students are from the university's Mass Communication and Journalism department. Of the stranded students seven are female. When asked, DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said, "I am in touch with the local administration. We have asked the cooperation of local administration and local people's representatives in this regard. We strongly urged them to rescue the students by sending trained rescue teams if necessary. " "I have talked to the trapped students. They are still well and healthy. I have spoken to the SP and DC and asked them for emergency assistance, food and rescue," he added. — UNB
TCB to sell essentials from June 22 in Ctg
CHATTOGRAM, June 17: The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will sell the essentials at fair price to 535,000 families in Chattogram under the family card programme. The TCB will start to sell the goods by trucks and dealers in the important spots of the Chattogram city. It will sell the goods at low prices. The TCB officials said, "TCB will start the open sale of essentials before the Eid-Ul-Adha. Consumers can buy essentials including rice, sugar, oil etc from the TCB sale centers at low prices. Soybean oil will be sold at Tk 110 per kg, sugar at Tk 55 per kg and lentil at Tk 65 per kg. Jamal Uddin Ahamed, Director of TCB in Chattogram, said, "TCB will start selling essentials in the port city from June 22 next. The sale will continue till July 5.
