RMG worker dies in Gazipur road accident
GAZIPUR, June 16 (UNB): A 25-year-old readymade garment (RMG) worker and mother of two children died after being run over by a speeding pickup van in Bhogra Maddhopara of Gazipur city on Friday. Sharifa Akter was an operator of a local apparel factory and used to live with her two sons and husband at a rented house in Outpara area. She hailed from Muktagachha upazila of Mymensingh.Locals and relatives said she had gone with her two sons to a hair salon at Sarkar Bari Crossing in Bhogra Maddhopara under Basan police station in the morning. While they were having their haircuts inside, Sharifa was waiting outside and at that time the pickup van ran over her. She succumbed to her injuries on the way to hospital. Md Sanowar Jahan, officer-in-charge of Basan police station, said the body was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Seven brokers held from Uttara passport office
A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion RAB) has arrested seven brokers from Uttara regional passport office in the city and sentenced those to different terms of jail, reports BSS. RAB executive magistrate Nadir Shah conducted the mobile court that started at 1:00 pm and continued until 5pm on Thursday. Confirming the matter to the news agency, RAB-1 senior assistant superintendant of police (media) Md Pervej Rana said a team of the elite force arrested the seven men, and the mobile court later sentenced Md Masud Rana to seven days, Md Mostafizur Rahman to seven days, Md Aman Ullah to seven days, Faruk Ahmed five days, M Mohiuddin Mintu five days, Md Kamrul Islam to five days and Md Rezaul Karim to five days of simple imprisonment. Four arrested with 9.5 kg gold in Ctg
Police have seized 9.5 kg of gold from a passenger bus in New Bridge area under Karnaphuli thana in Chattogram. Four people, including two women, were arrested with the gold during a search around 9:30am on Friday, said officer-in-charge of the thana Dulal Mahmud. The arrestees are Alak Dhar (23), Narayan Dhar (38), his wife Julie Dhar(35) and Paritosh Dhar (38). They are residents of Bashkhali upazila's Sadhanpur area, said the OC. — UNB
Lightning strike kills two students in M'singh
Two madrasa students were killed in lightning strike in Mymensingh's Dhobaura upazila on Thursday. The dead are Labiba Akhtar (8), daughter of Juti Mia, and Murshida Akhter (12), daughter of Omed Ali of Joripara village of Ghoshgaon union of the upazila According to police and local sources, a thunderbolt struck Labiba and Murshida when they were returning home from madrasha in the afternoon. They were rushed to Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead on arrival. Md Insan Ali, sub-inspector (SI) of Dhobaura, said following the appeal of the family, permission has been given to bury the bodies. — UNB
Man jailed for life for killing father-in-law
A Faridpur court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his father-in-law in Sadarpur upazila in 2017. The man is Alamin (41), a resident of Nayarshi village of Sadar union of the upazila. Shihabul Islam, judge of Faridpur Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court (two), also fined him Tk 10,000. In default, he has to serve another six months in prison. According to the case, in 2002, Alamin got married with Tota Mia's daughter Azufa Begum (38). Alamin had been torturing her for dowry since their marriage. — UNB
