Woman held with 8 kg gold at HSIA

Customs officials arrested a woman with over eight kg of gold worth Tk 65.7 million from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Tuesday night. The arrestee is Rekha Parvin. Rekha reached Dhaka from Dubai via an Emirates flight around 11:00 pm, said Farhana Begum, assistant director of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Circle, on Wednesday morning. Tipped off, a team of customs officials challenged Rekha when she was passing through the green channel of the airport. Later, they seized 69 gold bars, one gold chain, and six gold bangles after searching her and her handbag. — UNB

Case filed over arson attack on train at Tejgaon

A case has been filed against unidentified people in connection with the arson attack on 'Mohonganj Express' train in Tejgaon Rail Station area on Tuesday that left four people dead, reports UNB. Khalid Mosharraf, guard of the train filed the case with Dhaka Railway thana in Kamalapur at 10:30 pm on Tuesday night, said Ferdous Ahmed Biswas, officer-in-charge of the thana. Earlier on Tuesday, four people including a mother and a child were killed as miscreants set fire to the Dhaka-bound Mohanganj Express train in the city's Tejgaon Railway Station area. Three carriages of the train were set on fire around 5:04 am and the firefighters tamed the blaze around 6:45 am. —— UNB

Dhaka's air quality world's 2nd worst

Dhaka has ranked second on the list of cities worldwide with the worst air quality, with an AQI score of 297 at 8:50 am on Monday, reports UNB. Dhaka's air was classified as 'very unhealthy', according to the air quality index. Bosnia Herzegovina's Sarajevo and India's Kolkata and Delhi occupied the first, third and fourth spots on the list, respectively, with AQI scores of 327, 203 and 197. When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 101 and 150, air quality is considered 'unhealthy for sensitive groups', between 150 and 200 is 'unhealthy', between 201 and 300 is said to be 'very unhealthy', while a reading of 301+ is considered 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents. — UNB

Man held for 'killing wife' in Sunamganj

A woman has been hacked to death allegedly by her husband over a family feud in Baghmara village under Bishwamvarpur upazila of Sunamganj. The dead is Nazira Akhtar, wife of Delwar Hossain of the upazila. Quoting local people, Superintendent of Police Ehsan Shah said Delwar Hossain and his wife Nazira Akhter had a quarrel over family matters. During the quarrel, Delwar Hossain hit his wife on her head and face with an iron rod, around 9:00 pm on Wednesday, leaving Nazira Akhtar dead on the spot.On receiving the news, a police team rushed to the spot and arrested husband Delwar Hossain.— UNB
