Abducted Rohingya man shot dead in Cox's Bazar

A Rohingya man has been shot dead after being abducted from a refugee camp in Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya upazila. The victim was identified as 28-year-old Mohammad Faisal, a resident of camp No. 4 in Kutupalong. The incident took place in block D-8 of the camp on Thursday, and police believe it was linked to a 'turf war' between rival gangs at the settlement. According to Shamim Hossain, chief of Ukhiya thana, unidentified assailants abducted Faisal from his home around 10:00 pm with his mouth gagged before killing him. — bdnews24.com.

Five BGB men among eight injured

as pick up van collides with bus

At least eight people were injured when a pick-up van of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) collided with a bus in Gaibandha's Palashbari on Friday. The injured, including five BGB members, were admitted to Palashbari Upazila Health Complex primarily. Quoting locals, police said a Gaibandha-bound bus of JR Paribahan collided head-on with the pickup van at the Rice Mill area around 1:00 am. Md Arzu Sajjad, officer-in-charge of Palashbari thana, said the damaged bus and pickup have been removed from the road. The identity of the injured could not be known immediately, he said. — UNB

Woman's body recovered in Narail

The body of a 58-year-old woman was recovered from a bathroom in Mangalhata Moddhyopara in Lohagara upazila of Narail on Friday. The dead is Ambia, daughter of Habibar Mollah of the Mangalhata Moddhyopara. She used to live in her father's house. Syed Ali, sub-inspector of Lohagara thana, confirmed the matter. Locals spotted the body lying in the bathroom owned by one Razzeque Mollah in the village around 12:00 pm, said the SI. Being informed, they recovered the body from the tank and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said. Kanchan Kumar Roy, officer-in-charge of the thana, said they arrested a 30-year-old man named Sabbir Mollah, son of Razzeque Mollah, in this connection. The reason behind the death will be known upon investigation, the OC added. — UNB

Woman beaten dead over enmity in Bagerhat

A 45-year-old woman was beaten to death allegedly by her rivals in Guatala village under Morrelganj upazila of Bagerhat on Thursday evening. The clash also left five more people injured from both sides. The dead is Shahinur Begum, wife of one Jakir Talukdar of the village under Nishanbaria union of the same upazila. Md Samsuddin, officer-in-charge of Morrelganj thana, said there had long been a dispute between Jakir Talukdar and his paternal cousin Ferdous Talukdar over the house's entrance. On Thursday evening, the feuding groups locked into an altercation over the matter, which later turned violent, leaving six including Shahinur injured, he said. The injured were rushed to Upazila Health Complex where physicians declared her dead, the OC said, adding that the rest were undergoing treatment there. The body was sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said,l. An effort was on to arrest those who were involved with the murder, the police official said. — UNB

Man electrocuted in Kurigram

A 45-year-old man was electrocuted to death in Kurigram's Ulipur upazila on Friday. The deceased was identified as Bablu Miah, a resident of Ramdas Dhaniram Baldipara village of the upazila. Locals said Bablu climbed to a tree to cut the branches around 10 am on Friday. While cutting the branches, a branch accidentally fell on the electric wire and he got electrocuted. Hearing the scream, local people came and found Bablu Mia hanging from the tree and informed the fire service. On information, firemen rushed to the spot and recovered the body. Chirendranath Roy, AGM of Ulipur rural electricity office, said if Bablu Miah informed us before cutting the branches of the tree, we could have stopped the transmission line for a while. — UNB

39 held for selling drugs in city

As part of the anti-drugs drives in the city, members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested a total of 39 people on charges of selling and consuming drugs in the last 24 hours until 6:00 am on Friday. Police conducted the operations against the drugs sellers and consumers in different areas under various thanas of the metropolis. They also detained them and seized a large amount of drugs from their possessions from 6am of January 4 to 6 am on Friday. During the anti-drugs raids, police also seized 2,323 pieces of contraband yaba tablets, 244 grams and 50 puria (small packet) of heroin and 452 rams of cannabis (ganja) from their possessions, the release said. Police filed 23 separate cases against the arrestees in these connections. with respective police stations under the Narcotics Control Act. — BSS
