14 gold bars worth Tk 15m seized at Ctg airport

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) seized 14 gold bars worth around Tk 15 million from a cigarette packet at Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport on Friday. Md Al Amin Prodhan, revenue officer of the CIID in Chattogram, said they spotted the cigarette packet attached with a luggage in a conveyor belt at the airport in the morning. Later, the gold bars were recovered from the packet, he said, adding no one was arrested in this connection. The CIID officials suspected that the gold was brought from the United Arab Emirates on an air Arabia flight that landed early morning. The gold bars were handed over to the government exchequer and a legal process is underway in this regard. —UNB

Youth's body recovered in city's Jatrabari

The body of a 19-year-old youth was recovered from a space between two buildings in Jatrabari area of city on Friday. The dead, Md Hasan, was son of Shamsuddin of Alinagar Madrasa Bazar under Sadar upazila of Bhola. He used to live with relatives in Mirhazaribagh area under Jatrabari thana. Sub-Inspector Md Sabbir Hossain of the thana said locals spotted the body lying in the space between the buildings around 10:45 am. Being informed, they recovered the body and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said, adding that the victim might fell from one of the buildings. There were marks of injuries on his head and other organs of the body, he said, adding that the victim might be a drug addict. An unnatural death case was filed in this connection, he added. —UNB

Chuadanga Sadar UNO's security guard found dead

The body of an Ansar member was recovered from a washroom in a barrack stationed in Chuadanga Sadar Upazila Parishad on Thursday night. The dead, Jamal Uddin (55), was posted as a security guard of Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Fatema-Tuj-Zohora and a resident of Palty union under Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia. Jalmal's co-worker Saidur Rahman said they along with Jamal were on duty but suddenly he went missing for a long time. After searching, his unconscious body was found lying inside the washroom of the barrack, he said, adding that he was rushed to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital's emergency department where physicians declared him dead. Dr Afrina Islam, a physician of the hospital, said Jamal had died before arrival and he might have suffered from a stroke. Sheikh Sekendar Ali, officer-in-charge of Chuadanga Sadar thana, said the reason behind the death will be known after getting the autopsy report. Expressing shock at the demise, UNO Fatema said they came to know from Jamal's family that he had been suffering from heart disease. —UNB

Two killed in Bagerhat road crashes

Two persons were killed and two others were injured in separate road accidents on the Khulna-Dhaka main road in the Boiltoli area of Fakirhat upazila on Friday. The dead are truck driver Soyaeb Hossen (22) at Kashimpur village of Sathkhira, and trolley driver Monnaf Fokir (35) of Degree Chaar of Sirajganj. The injured helper of the truck Jahangir Shardar (30) and Trolley helper Mahbub Hasan (22) were taken to Fakirhat Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Fakirhat Fire Service and Civil Defense Station Officer-in-Charge Shahjan Mia said the truck carrying bitumen from Chattogram was going to Mongla. On the way, when it reached the Boiltoli area, its driver lost control around 8:00 am. The truck then crashed into a tree on the side of the road. Truck driver Soyaeb died on the spot and his assistant was injured. The other accident happened in the same area early Friday when the trolley lost control and collided with a tree beside the road, killing it driver on spot, he said. Ashraful Alam, officer-in-charge of Fakirhat thana, said highway police are taking legal action in this regard.

14 held busting train ticket scalpers’ syndicate

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in separate drives arrested two kingpins and 13 members of railway ticket black market syndicate from different areas of the city. The arrestees are ticket blacker gang leaders Uttam Chandra Das (30) and Md Selim (50), gang members Anwar Hossain alias Kashem (62), Abani Sarker Sumon (35), Md Harun Miah (60), Md Mannan (50), Md Anwar Hossain (50), Md Faruk (62), Md Shahidul Islam Babu (22), Md Jewel (23), Md Abdur Rahim (32), Md Morshed Miah (45), Abdul Ali (22), and Md Zobayer. Teams of RAB-3 arrested them in separate drives from Kamalapur and Airport Railway Stations on Thursday night. A total of 1,244 train tickets of different routes, 14 mobile phones, and Tk 20,000 in cash were seized from the arrestees. RAB Legal and Media Wing director Commander Khandaker Al Moin disclosed the matter at a press briefing at its Media Centre at Karwan Bazar on Friday. He also said the arrestees confessed to their crimes in primary interrogation. "Selim had been running his gang at Kamalapur Railway Station while Uttam at Airport Railway Station for long. They used to collect the tickets of different trains from railway server and booking counters with the help of corrupt employees. The gang members used to take 50 per cent of the ticket blacking profit, the other 50 per cent was given to the corrupt railway employees," Khandaker Al Moin said. —BSS
