Man held with 3.49 kg gold

at Dhaka airport

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) detained a man along with 3.498 kg of gold from Shahjalal International Airport on Friday night. The detainee was identified as M Masud Imam. Farhana Begum, assistant director of Customs Intelligence and Investigation circle, said a flight of Emirates Airlines landed at the airport from Dubai at around 10:46 pm. Tipped off, a team of CIID challenged Imam and seized 28 gold bars and gold coins weighing 3.498 kg worth Tk 31.4 million from his two money bags. — UNB

Man beaten dead over cutting tree in Chandpur

CHANDPUR, Feb 03: A 50-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his younger brother over a dispute arising from the fate of a tree in Matlab Uttar upazila of Chandpur on Friday. Deceased Alamgir Hossain Prodhan was the son of Nur Hossain Prodhan of Fatehpur Purbo Union in the upazila and serving as the imam of a mosque in Dhaka. Locals said there had long been a dispute over ownership of properties among six brothers including the duo of the Prodhan family. The victim's daughter Khaleda Begum said her father came to the house from Dhaka on Thursday night to attend religious programmes in the locality. An altercation broke out between her father and paternal uncle Shukkur Ali Prodhan over cutting the tree in the morning, she said, adding that the uncle hit on her father's head with sticks, leaving him critically injured.After rescuing, locals rushed him to Matlab South Upazila Health Complex where physicians declared him dead upon arrival. — UNB

COX'S BAZAR, Feb 03: A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death by some locals when the victim was trying to save his grandmother from the attack of the accused in Sadar upazila of Cox's Bazar on Friday. The deceased Alauddin was the son of one Imran of Samity Para area under the ward No-1 of Cox's Bazar municipality. Local ward councillor Aktar Kamla said local youths Fazal Karim and Mumin attacked the grandmother, who runs a tea stall in the area, when she asked them to pay for the tea. Alauddin rushed to save his grandmother, who was being beaten and stabbed by the two local goons. While he did manage to get her to safety, Alauddin ended up suffering stab wounds himself, and bled to death on the spot. Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rakibuzzaman confirmed the matter, saying that the body was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy after recovering it from the spot.Efforts were on to nab those who were involved with the killing, he added. — UNB
