19 more dengue patients

hospitalised in 24 hours

Nineteen more people were hospitalised with dengue in 24 hours until Saturday morning. Of the new patients, nine were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka city and the rest outside it, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Currently, 134 patients are receiving treatment at several hospitals across the country. So far, 2,745 dengue cases have been reported since January 01, 2024, said DGHS. Last year, a total of 1,705 people lost their lives due to dengue, making it the deadliest year on record. The DGHS recorded 321,179 dengue cases and 3, 18,749 recoveries last year. — UNB

Truck hits metro rail pillar

A truck laden with soil lost control and rammed the P-364 pillar of the metro rail in the city's Agargaon area on Saturday. Kafrul police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Monir Hossain confirmed the matter. "A bus and a truck collided in Agargaon. Later, the truck lost control and hit a pillar of the metro rail. The truck driver fled the scene immediately after the incident. The bus driver and helper were injured in the incident. They are currently under treatment in the hospital," he said. Dhaka's air quality 3rd worst in world

Dhaka has ranked third on the list of cities worldwide with the worst air quality with an AQI value of 132 at 8:56 am on Saturday morning. Dhaka's air was classified as 'unhealthy for sensitive groups' on Saturday, according to the air quality index. India's Delhi and Democratic Republic of the Congo's Kinshasa occupied the first and second spots on the list, with AQI scores of 176 and 170 respectively. When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 101 and 150, air quality is considered 'unhealthy for sensitive groups', between 150 and 200 is 'unhealthy', between 201 and 300 is said to be 'very uhealthy', while a reading of 301+ is considered 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents. — UNB
