Mother dies falling from son's bike

A woman has died after falling off the back of her son's motorcycle in Chapainawabganj's Sadar upazila, reports bdnews24.com. The accident occurred in the Narendrapur area of the Sadar upazila around 10:00 am on Friday, according to Md Mehedi Hasan, chief of the Sadar thana. The victim was identified as Golapi Begum (35), a wife and mother to two. Masud Rana, her older son, said he was on the way to the town with his mother when she accidentally fell onto the road and was seriously injured. With the help of locals, he rushed her to the Sadar Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared her dead. — UNB

DNCC's 5,000 cleaners, 10 QRTs working

to drain out stagnant water

Over 5,000 cleaners and 10 Quick Response Teams (QRTs) of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) have been engaged in addressing the waterlogging caused by the heavy rainfall on Friday morning. Each QRT consists of 10 members and is actively operating in 10 different zones to ensure swift water drainage, according a media release signed by DNCC Public Relations Officer Mokbul Hossain. Until 12:00 pm, stagnant water was drained from some streets to ease traffic movement, while five pumps stationed in Kalyanpur have been operating in unison since morning to expedite water removal, it said. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Dhaka experienced 60 millimetres of rain inthree hours until 9:00 am, with the highest rainfall in the country. Residents are requested to inform the DNCC by dialling its hotline, 16106, if there is waterlogging, as the QRT will instantly respond. As per the directive from Mayor Md Atiqul Islam, various departments, including engineering and waste management, have been mobilised since early morning. The waterlogging situation is being continuously monitored, with immediate measures being taken to address the issue. — UNB

15 Covid-19 cases reported

Bangladesh reported 15 more Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours until Friday morning. With the new numbers, the country's total Covid-19 caseload rose to 2,051,207, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The official death toll from the disease remains unchanged at 29,498 as no new fatalities were reported during this period. The daily case test positivity rate was 5.14 per cent as 292 samples were tested, said the DGHS. The recovery and death rates stood at 98.41 per cent and 1.44 per cent, respectively. — UNB

Two HC staffers get bail in bribery case

A Dhaka court has granted bail to two High Court (HC) Division employees arrested for allegedly taking bribes in a judge's name. The two accused are MLSS Md Abdur Rashid and MLSS Md Hafiz. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tarikul Islam passed the order on Friday as police produced the duo before the court and pleaded to keep them behind bars until the end of the probe. Their lawyers, however, argued for their bail. After hearing both sides, the court granted the two accused bail. The two allegedly took about Tk 0.92 million in bribes from an accused in a case, in front of the Registrar General's office on July 10 afternoon. As the concerned judge learned the matter, he summoned the Supreme Court security team and handed the two accused to the concerned police station. High Court bench officer Sujit Kumar Biswas later filed the case with Shahbagh thana. — BSS

Tourist goes missing while taking bath in haor

A tourist went missing while taking a bath in the haor in Mithamoin in Kishoreganj on Friday afternoon. The missing tourist, Abir Hossain (20), is son of Abdul Alim of Dhaka's Uttar Mugda. According to the Fire Service, Abir along with members of his family, went to Mithamoin haor area on Friday. Around 3:00 pm, they went to take a bath in the haor at Mithamoin zero point area. Abir went missing while trying to help one of his companions who was swept away by the current. Sujan Ahmed Imran, an eyewitness, said he along with his friends wwas taking a bath, and Abir and his family members were next to them. Abir drowned while trying to help one of his companions. "We tried to rescue Abir but failed and informed the Fire Service," Sujan Ahmed added. Md Saiful Islam, in-charge of Mithamoin Fire Service Station, said they have reached the scene. "Our diving team is coming from Kishoreganj. Once they arrive, the rescue operation will begin," he added. — UNB
