Two pry teacher candidates killed in Chandpur road crash

Two people were killed on their way to take part in recruitment exam for assistant teachers of primary schools in a collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a truck in Sadar upazila of Chandpur, police said. Two others were injured in the accident, said police. The deceased were identified as Fatema Alam, 24, and Md Abdullah, 25, of Hajiganj upazila of the district. The accident occurred at around 09:30 am when a Chandpur-bound auto-rickshaw collided with a speeding sand-laden truck coming from opposite direction on the Chandpur-Cumilla regional road of the upazila, leaving Fatema dead on spot and other occupants of the auto-rickshaw injured.

Father, son land in jail for killing elephant in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, May 20: A court in Chattogram has remanded in judicial custody a man and his son in a case filed over the killing of a wild elephant in Rangunia upazila in 2019. A senior judicial magistrate passed the order after Md Abul Hashem and his son Sahab Uddin surrendered before the court and sought bail on Thursday. Chattogram divisional forest officer (South) Shafiqul Islam said the wild elephant was electrocuted when it came in contact with an illegal power line installed by the two at Narishcha Bit in Rangunia range of the southern forest division in November 2019. At the time, a case was filed in the court against the father-son duo. — UNB

Shrimps inflated with jelly seized in Jashore

JASHORE, May 20: Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Thursday confiscated two tonnes of shrimps injected with a jelly-like substance to artificially increase their weight from Bahadurpur in Jashore city. Acting on a tip-off, Rab conducted the drive at night and seized three trucks with shrimps worth Tk 1.5 million through the mobile court with the help of the Department of Fisheries, Khulna. The mobile court also fined Tk 250,000 to the owners of the tainted shrimps. — UNB
