17 more Covid cases reported
Bangladesh reported 17 more Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours until Thursday morning. With the new numbers, the country's total caseload rose to 2,045,120, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). However, the official death toll from the disease remained unchanged at 29,476 as no new fatalities were reported. The daily case test positivity dropped to 1.28 percent from Wednesday 2.46 percent as 1, 333 samples were tested. The recovery and death rates stood at 98.4 and 1.44 percent respectively.
Bangladesh registered its highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 in 2021. — UNB
Member of 'dope gang' held at HSIA
Members of Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) arrested a member of a "dope gang" from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Wednesday night. The arrestee is Md Mamun, 31, of Kishoreganj district. Additional superintendent of APBn, Mohammad Ziaul Haque, said they received two complaints against dope gangs on August 6 and 13. On August 5, Mamun allegedly looted the valuables of one Ajit Sarkar, who returned from Dubai, after giving him sedative-laced juice. In the same process, Yeasin Arafat, who returned from Doha, lost his valuables on August 13. After investigation, the APBn members identified Mamun, who in the guise of a passenger, met people arriving from different countries and looted their valuables after giving them sedatives. APBn members arrested Mamun from the airport lounge at 10 am on Wednesday. — UNB
Woman injured in Jurain blast dies
A woman who suffered burn injuries in an explosion in city’'s Jurain died on Thursda.. Mukta Khatun, 30, succumbed to her injuries around 8:30am at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. Confirming the death, resident doctor Dr Tariqul Islam said 45 percent of Mukta's body was burnt. Five members of a family, including a child, suffered burn injuries in an explosion apparently from a gas pipeline leak in the capital's Jurain on Monday. The deceased's husband Athar, 35, and daughter Afsana, 5, are currently undergoing treatment at the same hospital. — UNB
