Youth gunned down in Cumilla

A youth was killed and three others were injured in a gunfight between two groups for establishing supremacy over a human hauler stand in Cumilla city's Shasangachha on Friday. The dead are Arnab (30), son of Md Azhar of Shasangachha. The identities of the injured could not be known immediately. Confirming the matter, Md Firoz Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali thana, said there had long been a dispute between two groups over controlling the human hauler stand. Four people including Arnab sustained bullet injuries when the both feuding groups traded bullets in the afternoon, he said, adding that the impact of the clash left Arnab dead on the spot. The rest injured were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital where they have been undergoing treatment, he said. It couldn't immediately be confirmed whether Arnab was a fellow of any group or any pedestrian, the OC said. No one has been arrested and no case lodged in this connection, the police officer added. — UNB

Youth electrocuted in Dinajpur

A 24-year-old youth were electrocuted while connecting a wifi router at his house in Dinajpur's Nawabganj upazila on Friday. The dead is Rakibul Hasan Rabbi, son of Enamul Hoque of Malarpara of the upazila. Nuruzzaman, sub-inspector of Nawabganj thana, confirmed the matter. Rabbi came into contact with an electric wire while connecting the wifi router at his house around 10:30 am, leaving him dead on the spot, the SI said. An unnatural death case has been filed in this connection, he added. — UNB

Seven land in jail over journo’s death in Barguna

A Barguna court has sent seven members of Barguna Press Club to jail upon surrender in a case filed over the death of another journalist following an attack on Barguna Press Club on February 19. Barguna Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Md Harun-Or-Rashid passed the order after rejecting a prayer for bail submitted by the defendants on Thursday. Those who landed in jail are Sohel Hafiz, Ariful Islam Murad, Md. Kashem Hawlader, Saiful Islam Miraz, Oliullah Imran, Sohag Hawlader and Sagir Hossain Titu. Though a total of eight accused surrendered before the court with the bail prayer, the court only granted bail to Press Club General Secretary Jafar Hossain Hawlader, who had been in India during the attack. Press Club's seven members including its acting President Sohel Hafiz, members Ferdous Khan Emon and Saiful Islam Miraj were injured during the attack allegedly by deceased journo and also local Union Parishad member Masud Talukdar, his cohort Mushfiq Arif and others. On February 29, the press club authorities filed a case naming 17 individuals and 50 unidentified individuals with the concerned thana. — UNB

Man, sons get life for killing neighbour over land dispute in Sylhet

A Sylhet court has sentenced a man and his two sons to life term in jail in a case filed for killing a neighbour over land dispute in Sylhet's Bishwanathpur upazila around six years back. Sylhet Additional District and Sessions Judge's Fourth Court Judge Shaila Sharmin also fined the convicts Tk 20, 000 each, said the court's bench assistant Kabir Hossain on Thursday. The convicts are Ashique Miah (60), his sons Md Emran Miah (22), and Kamran Miah (18), hailing from Tilokpur village under Khajanchhi union of the upazila. Of the convicts, only father Ashique Miah was on the dock during the delivery of the judgment. According to the case statement, there had long been a dispute between the accused Ashique and neighbour Abdur Rauf over the ownership of a waterbody in the village. On February 19, 2018, Ashique and others equipped with locally made sharp weapons attacked Rauf when he installed a pump in the waterbody for irrigation, leaving him critically injured. On February 21, the victim succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital. Later, the victim's brother Abdul Quddus filed a murder case with the Bishwanath thana in this connection. — UNB

One gets life in C'nawabganj drug case

A Chapainawabganj court has sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment in a drug case. Senior Sessions Judge Md. Adeeb Ali gave this verdict in presence of the convict on Thursday. The convict is Raju (21), son of Mofizul Islam of Rasulpur village under Shibganj upazila of the district.The court also fined him Tk 50,000, in default, he will have to suffer one- year more in jail. According to the prosecution story, in brief, acting on a tip-off, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted a raid in Baliadighi area under Shibganj upazila on January 21, 2021 and arrested Raju with 195 pieces of Buprenorphin injection. — BSS
