Nine persons killed in separate incidents in three districts

Nine persons were killed in separate incidents in Patuakhali, C'nawabganj and Kushtia during the last 24 hours, according to news agencies.

In Patuakhali, four members of a family died from electrocution at Dholapara village in Bauphal upazila on Friday morning.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Hye, 55, his two daughters-Bina, 20 and Mohua 22, and his brother-in-law Ibrahim 40, of the village.

Quoting witnesses police the pond water of Abdul Hye's house got electrified as a live electric wire got snapped suddenly and fell into the pond.

Abdul Hye got electrocuted when he went to the pond for fishing around 11:00 am.

His two daughters and brother-in-law met the same fate as they tried to rescue Abdul Hye from the pond.

Masudur Rahman, officer-in-charge Bauphal Police Station, confirmed the incident.

Meanwhile, in C'nawabganj, three persons including a woman were killed when

lightning struck them in two separate incidents Friday noon.

The woman victim was identified as Sona Begum 35, wife of Rafiqul Islam of Jugibari Lalpukur village under Gomastapur upazila of the district. The other victim was Motahar Hossain Mukul 45, son of Kasimuddin of Parbatipur Adda village under same upazila of the district.

Chairman of Parbatipur Union Parishad Moazzem Hossain said, Motahar Hossain Mukul was working on the roof of his house and Sona Begum was working at her house and suddenly lightning struck them killing both on the spot at about 12-30 pm.

Being struck by lightning farmer Rana 17, son of Monirul Islam of Hamidpur village under Nachole upazila of the district also lost his life on Thursday afternoon. He also died on the spot.

In Kushtia, Two siblings, including a medical student, drowned in a pond of Mahishakhola village in Kumarkhali upazila Friday noon. The deceased were identified as Jhuma, 23, a third year MBBS student of Khulna Medical College, and Jui, 16, daughters of Amzad Hossain of the village. Family sources said Jhuma and Jui slipped into deep water while they were taking their bath in the pond.

Locals rescued them and took them to nearby Khoksha Upazila Health Complex where they died after some time. Meanwhile, family members alleged that there was no doctor at the hospital for an hour after the two sisters were taken there. Their lives could have been saved if there was any doctor at the health complex, they said.
