Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nur Mohammad said there was no alternative to implementing the proposed Bangladesh Police Ordinance-2007 to make the police more transparent, professional and accountable to the people.

The IGP made the remark at a seminar on 'Necessity of Reform of the Police Act for National Development' organised by the Bangladesh Unnayan Parishad (BUP) at the Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) auditorium in the city Saturday, reports UNB.

Former adviser of the caretaker government ASM Shahjahan presented the keynote address while BUP Chairman and BEA President Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad presided over the seminar.

Nur Mohammad said the country's police force was functioning under the outdated Police Act-1861 enacted during the British colonial days, where there was no place for such words as community, democracy, constitution, media and human rights.

"This act needs to be reformed and updated immediately", he said adding that in the proposed Police Ordinance everything was available.

"Let's move forward for implementation of the proposed Police Ordinance
