No DMP clampdown on illegal rickshaws

May 18, 2009 00:00:00

Police will not clamp down on any of the 0.5 million (five lakh) unauthorised rickshaws in the city anytime soon, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner AKM Shahidul Haque said Saturday, reports bdnews24.com.
"More rickshaws are in demand in the city," he said at a views-exchange meeting with senior police officers on the problems of rickshaw-pullers in the city. "No action will be taken against them, rather some of them can be legalised after having talks with Dhaka City Corporation (DCC)," the DMP commissioner said.
Unemployment, poverty, terrorism and other crimes may rise in the event of an action against them before creating alternative sources of income for them, he said. The road from Kuril Bishwa Road to Sayedabad will be out of bounds for rickshaws for the time being. Some other areas will be off-limits to rickshaws later, Haque said.
