No permit for new brick kilns

FE REPORT | September 20, 2024 12:00:00

The government has announced that no permits will be issued for new brick kilns to fight air pollution.

As many as 3,491 brick kilns operating without environmental clearance will be shut down. All illegally constructed brick kilns in Chattogram Hill Tracts region will also be relocated.

Environment and Water Resources Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan came up with the view during a meeting at Secretariat on Thursday.

Officials from the Department of Environment and leaders of the Bangladesh Brick Manufacturing Owners Association (BBMOA) were present at the meeting.

The discussion focused on eco-friendly brick production, modernisation of brick kilns and reducing carbon emissions.

Rizwana Hasan expressed deep concern over the environmental impact of brick kilns, stating that constructing buildings are not enough if we cannot ensure a livable environment for future generation.

She further said that air pollution is reducing the average life expectancy by 5-7 years. Hence, no brick kilns will be allowed to operate without licences and environmental clearance.

She also emphasized strict action against corruption within the Department of Environment.

BBMOA leaders highlighted the challenges faced by the brick kiln industry and proposed adopting eco-friendly technologies.

They urged government support for encouraging the use of green technology in kilns and submitted a memorandum to the adviser.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, the Additional Secretary, the Director General of the Department of Environment, BBMOA Central Committee President Feroz Haider Khan, and leaders from various districts.

Earlier, Syeda Rizwana Hasan provided guidance to senior officials during a special meeting at the ministry to ensure the successful implementation of ongoing projects.
