No problem for Covid positive mother to breastfeed

FE Report | August 05, 2021 00:00:00

Mothers who are diagnosed with coronavirus can breastfeed their babies by wearing face masks and following proper hygiene rules.

Also, breastfeeding within one hour of birth can reduce mortality rate by 31 per cent and only breastfeeding up to six months can reduce the risk of infant death by a further 13 per cent.

Therefore, mother's milk should be fed to prevent infant mortality and physical and mental development, and breastfeeding can bring benefits for both mother and baby, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said, referring to different research findings.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed to create breastfeeding corners in various industrial factories, hospitals and other institutions in the country to protect breastfeeding everywhere outside the home, the minister mentioned.

Mr Maleque made these remarks while addressing an inaugural session of the World Breastfeeding Week held virtually on Monday.

The health ministry along with some other organisations jointly organised the event. Officials of the ministry and experts participated.

We need to work on identifying and controlling the digital marketing strategies of breast milk alternative baby food companies, the minister stressed.

Bangladesh ranked top out of 97 countries in the world and our Baby Food Act is recognised as the first class act, he added.
