No room for militancy in country: RAB chief

Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Benazir Ahmed said Saturday there is no room for militancy in our country as the people of different faiths live in religious harmony, reports BSS.
"There is no room for militancy here…an excellent relation exists among people of different faiths," he said while speaking at a debate competition titled anti-violence and extremism' at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) in the city.
The RAB DG said, "Though international conspiracies were active to spread militancy in Bangladesh, we were successful in handling the situation."
Referring to the "zero tolerance policy" of the incumbent government, Benazir categorically said Bangladesh has become successful to curb militant outfits.
"Apart from the government, mass people's strong opposition against militancy and active vigilance of the law enforcers helped us to combat militancy in Bangladesh," he added.
The RAB DG said following the New Zealand's mosque shootings, security vigilance has been intensified and members of the law enforcement agencies have been asked to remain alert.
Noting that uncontrolled use of information technology (IT) is one of the root-causes of spreading terrorism, the senior RAB official urged all to remain alert against virtual violence to remove militancy and violence.
Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron presided over the programme. Prof Abu Mohammad Rois, Prof Mazhar Mosharraf, Journalists -Mainul Islam and Nadia Sharmin and Dr SM Morshed, were also present as the judges of the debate competition.
