FARIDPUR, Dec 18: Non-iodised salt is being sold in all the markets of eight upazilas under Faridpur district ignoring the government's rules.
By defying the ban on non-iodised salt, the shopkeepers seem to have no respect for the health of the consumers. The consumers are buying the non-iodised salt because it is cheaper.
According to market source, one kg of iodised salt is being sold at Tk 14-15 while non-iodised salt will cost between Tk 10-12.
The government has taken all mandatory measures to bring all salt factories under salt production rules in the country.
UNICEF has supplied machines for mixing iodine with salt but some factories have not yet installed those machines. UNICEF has organised seminars to make both the factory owners and consumers aware about iodised salt, and workers and owners of the salt mills have been trained how to prepare iodised salt. However, it seems that some people are less concerned about health and more concerned about making profits.
