The National University (NU) authorities are planning to refix its academic session including introduction of nine-month academic year to modernise the university's education system.

Sources at the university said they had some specific agenda to upgrade the country's lone chain university education system, relieving its more than one million students of session jams.

"We've a plan to cut the existing academic year to nine months to minimise the lengthy academic session", a source said adding that the academic year couldn't be a calendar year as being followed in the university, currently.

They said currently the NU students had to spend at least 18 months to complete one year academic session, resulting in an increased number of dropouts.

Developed countries like the United States of America (USA) and the European countries were maintaining nine-month academic calendars for the university students, said Prof Md Wahiduzzaman of the Institute of Education and Research of the Dhaka University (DU).

He said even maximum private universities in Bangladesh were following a short academic calendar, but the NU was maintaining a calendar year as its academic year.

"Unfortunately, the students have to spend over six years to complete their four-year bachelor degree from the university", he added.

He said the university should also modernise its traditional curriculum to make the students competent globally.

"Other universities complete 16 to 18 credits during a six-month semester, but the National University takes one year to complete the same credits", he said.
