Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu said Sunday legal actions would be taken against government officials, if they deny giving information following an application by any citizen, reports BSS.
"Concealing information is a crime. When information is hidden, the doors of corruption and nepotism open up," the minister said this while speaking as the chief guest at a views-exchange meeting on "Right to Information Act and Marginal People-Friendly Social Safety Net Programmes" organised by Research body Samonnaya with the assistance of Manusher Janya Foundation at the National Press Club in the city Sunday.
Presided over by Bangladesh Bank former Deputy Governor Khandaker Ibrahim Khaled, the meeting was also addressed by Chief Information Commissioner Mohammad Faruque, Secretary M Farhad Hossain and researcher Dr Mahfuz Kabir.
Mr Inu urged the media personnel to use the right to information act to know about government activities and project those to the people.
"If any official denies giving information, you can lodge complaints with the Information Commission," he added.
The minister suggested the media to allocate some time or space to inform the people about social safety net programmes of the government.
