Opinion sharing meet on Halda river restoration project

CHITTAGONG, Apr 21: Speakers at an opinion sharing meeting for "Restoring and preserving the features of the river Halda" called for scientifically implementing the natural fish breeding field restoration project of Halda River. Otherwise, the project would not serve any purpose and entire fisheries field would be spoiled.
They, therefore, called for the re-evaluation of the project and immediate implementation of the relevant components.
Different professionals and the persons concerned with the Halda River took part in the open discussion arranged under the joint auspices of Institute of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB) Chittagong Centre and Parikolpita Chittagong Forum on Sunday at IEB Chittagong centre.
The speakers participating in the discussion said that out of a total project allocation of Tk 140 million, around Tk 62.5 million has been earmarked for dredging but dredging, they said was not required for the restoration of the Halda river.
Prof. Mohammad Sikandar Khan while delivering the keynote paper said the main problem of the Halda river restoration project lies in its management the importance of which has not been clearly conceived and presented.
IEB Chittagong centre honorary Secretary Engr. Sadeque Md Chowdhury conducted the meeting while former vice chancellor of Chittagong University Prof Alamgir Md Sirajuddin, Sultan Mahmud, Md Harun and Md Shafiqul Islam took part in the discussion among others.
