In 2001, the first amniotic membrane processing laboratory in the country was established by ORBIS International at Islamia Eye Hospital in Dhaka.
The team, comprising journalists, artists and students, visited Khluna and Dhaka to see grassroots level activities on sight saving of its local wing.
Some nine children, who recently got their eyesight restored with the successful surgery at the IEH, gave a warm welcome to the team members who came from Hong Kong.
The IEH Adviser Zaheda Ispahani gave a brief presentation on the activities of the IEH and its contribution to sight saving in the country.
The IEH adviser has introduced Tapasi Das, a young woman who recently got back her eyesight with the corneal transplant at the IEH.
She is now working as a beautician after successful operation on her eyes.
ORBIS Bangladesh country director Abu Raihan led the team in the IEH.
About 1000 patients every day receive treatment at the IEH.
In the presentation, Zaheda Ispahani introduced the cornea clinic of the IEH, where they provide both service delivery and training.

The ORBIS international, in partnership with IEH, has started a four-year project on developing training capacity of IEH on the area of cornea sub-specialty that started in 2004.
The project aims at developing the training capacity in cornea sub-specialty by strengthening IEH's capability in treating corneal diseases.
It has a six- month competitive corneal fellowship for candidates from all over the country. So far 18 candidates have received the corneal fellowship from IEH.
