Over 800 killed in road crashes in June: BJKS

As many as 801 people were killed and 3,267 others injured in road accidents across the country in June this year, reveals a report of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS), a passenger welfare association, published on Wednesday.

The association prepared the report based on newspaper reports and hospital records.

Furthermore, 42 people were killed and nine others injured in 46 railway accidents while 12 people were killed, seven injured and nine went missing in nine accidents on waterways during the same period.

In total, 855 people were killed and 3,283 injured in a total of 612 accidents on roads, railways and waterways.

During this period, 222 people were killed and 1,093 injured in 217 motorcycle accidents which is 38.95 per cent of the total accidents, 38.01 per cent of the dead and 33.45 per cent of the injured.

The highest number of road accidents took place in Dhaka division where 139 people were killed and 214 injured in 133 road accidents while lowest 29 road accidents took lives of 33 people and injured 47 in Sylhet division.

Members of the Road Accident Monitoring Cell of the association monitor the news reports on accidents published in the national, regional and online newspapers, and this report was prepared with the information from patients injured in road accidents at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).

BJKS analysing newspaper reports found 584 people were killed and 1,128 injured in 557 road accidents across the country in June this year.

On the other hand, according to the data of NITOR, 2,139 patients with road accident injuries were admitted to the hospital this month.

Of them, 922 patients were admitted with broken arms or legs following motorcycle accidents.

Based on the assessment of the World Health Organization (WHO) that 15 per cent of patients injured in road accidents die while receiving treatment in hospitals or at home, BJKS reached the conclusion that an estimated 801 people were killed and 3,267 injured in road accidents in the country in June.

There are about 9,000 public and private hospitals in the country. The association also demanded that the BRTA inform them about how many patients were admitted to these hospitals with road accident injuries in June.
