Over 90 pc bldg in city violate 'Building Construction Rules 1996': TIB study

Over 90 per cent buildings in the capital city have been built violating the 'Building Construction Rules 1996' and Tk 20-25 crore is allegedly transacted in bribe annually in RAJUK only for approval of designs of such houses, reports UNB.
This was revealed in a study conducted by Transparency International Bangladesh at a discussion meeting on 'Way out for Combating Corruption in Plan Passing Process in RAJUK" held at BIAM auditorium Wednesday.
Assistant Professor of Urban Planning Department of Dhaka University Md Akhter Mahmud carried out the study under TIB Fellowship Programme.
Among other recommendations made in the study report are: (a) to formulate and implement long-term strategy of urban planning; (b) to make approval process of the design by RAJUK easier and accountable; and (c) to formulate a national urban policy.
Executive Director of TIB Iftekharuzzan, former chairman of RAJUK Azizul Haque, Dhaka University professor Dr Nurul Islam Nazem, among others, spoke on the occasion.
