Over 91pc consider sexual harassment as violence

More than 91 per cent women in cities consider sexual harassment as violence while 81 per cent of the victims are afraid of seeking police help, an ActionAid Bangladesh study has revealed.
The study also showed about 48 per cent of the city women suffer from insecurity during their movement on mass transports, streets and in open crowded areas. As many as 88 per cent of women participating in the research said they were sexually harassed by the pedestrians, male passengers and buyers.
These were revealed during the launch of the 'Safe Cities for Women' campaign Wednesday at Chhayanat Bhaban in the city. The campaign was launched in 20 countries simultaneously where ActionAid has its activities. Besides, May 20 has been declared as 'Safe Cities for Women Day' at the programme.
Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Annisul Huq was present as the chief guest at the programme. In his speech, Annisul Huq said the severity of the problem is in no way acceptable and it requires increased awareness among political leaders.
