After two years Cyclone Sidr hit the southern part of the country on November 15, 2007 killing more than 3,000 people and leaving millions homeless, over half million survivors are still struggling for shelter and living at high risk of suffering from diseases than before, sources said, reports BSS.
According to the official report, approximately 8.5 million people were affected, about 3,032 were killed and 1.6 million household damaged. Around 1.2 million livestock were lost and standing crops of 2.4 million acres of land were damaged. The overall economic loss was estimated at US$ 1.7 billion.
A high official of the Disaster Management Bureau said that the relief and rehabilitation programmes in cyclone-hit areas were being conducted at private and government levels, where social monitoring was a must to ensure proper implementation of the programmes.
