SIRAJGANJ, July 13 (UNB): Water Resources Adviser ASM Matiur Rahman has said permanent measures will be taken soon for protecting the district from erosion by the Jamuna River.
The Adviser said this while talking to journalists after visiting the erosion-hit different areas in Enayetpur thana on Friday.
A project, involving Tk 249 crore, has been taken up for constructing a permanent dam in the next dry season for checking erosion by the river, he told the newsmen.
The Adviser also visited the town protection embankment area.
Water Resources Secretary Syed M Jubair, Deputy Commissioner of the district Ibrahim Khalil and other officials accompanied the Adviser during the visit.
BSS adds: The Flood Forecast and Warning Centre in its latest bulletin said today all the rivers are flowing below their respective danger levels and no flood situation prevails now in the country.
Major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, the Jamuna, the Ganges and the Padma, are in the rising trend, but are flowing below their danger levels, said a press release.
In its forecast for next 24 hours until 6 am tomorrow, the centre said the Brahmaputra-Jamuna at Bahadurabad is likely to rise by 26 cm and may flow 174 cm below the danger level, at Sirajganj it is likely to rise by 20 cm and may flow 115 cm the below danger level and at Aricha, it is likely to rise by 9 cm and may flow 171 cm below the danger level.
The Padma at Goalundo is likely to rise by 10 cm and may flow 133 cm below the danger level while at Bhagyak it is likely to rise by 6 cm steady and may flow 120 cm below the danger level.
The Surma at Sylhet is likely to fall by 10 cm and may flow 213 cm below the danger level and at Sunamganj it is likely to fall by 5 cm and may flow 96 cm below the danger mark.
The Kushiyara at Sheola is likely to fall by 11 cm and may flow 240 cm below danger level while the Meghna at Bhairab Bazar is likely to rise by 1 cm and may flow 110 cm below the danger level.
