Petrobangla builds memorial plaques in five gas-fields

The state-run Petrobangla has built five memorial plaques in five gas-fields - Bakhrabad, Titas, Rashidpur, Kailashtila and Habiganj - to acknowledge the contribution of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to ensure the country's energy security, its Chairman Zanendra Nath Sarker told the FE on Monday.
The monuments are expected to be inaugurated by State Minister for Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid tomorrow (Wednesday) on the Energy Security Day.
Sources said Bangabandhu purchased five onshore gas-fields - Bakhrabad, Titas, Rashidpur, Kailashtila and Habiganj - from multinational oil drilling company Shell Oil on August 9, 1975.
The purchasing cost of these wells was 4.5 million pound sterling (around Tk 178.60 million during that period).
Around 62.55 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas were being produced from six wells in the two gas-fields of these five fields, according to the Petrobangla official data.
Natural gas reserve was assessed at 5.58 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) in the five gas-fields during that time. Their cumulative natural gas reserve was estimated at 15.58 Tcf in the latest estimation.
Around 10.26 Tcf of gas have already been produced from these fields until June 2023 for domestic consumption, and the value of this gas is around Tk 6.21 trillion at current market price.
After 48 years of production, these five onshore gas fields have cumulative gas reserve of around 5.23 Tcf, worth around Tk 3.17 trillion, according to the Petrobangla.
