A total of 48.7 kgs of plastic waste, mostly single-use plastic, have been collected from Dhaka city streets in a two-day campaign.
A local environment rights group 'Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO)' organised the awareness and clean campaign with participation of students, showing poor waste management and lack of awareness among citizens.
ESDO conducted the campaign, styled 'Brand Audit', as an initiative to measure the number of different brands that can be found on plastic waste, said a media release on Thursday.
ESDO identified that six international and 14 local parent companies, owning near about 76 brands, were mainly contributing to the waste.
The campaign started from the Dhanmondi Government Boys' High School and made its way to Bijoy Sharani Road via Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, TNT, Ispahani Islamia Eye Hospital, Tejgaon College, and Khamarbari.
About 50 students of Lalmatia Housing Society School and College participated in the campaign and collected single-use plastic waste from different locations.
Secretary General of ESDO Shahriar Hossain, and Principal of Lalmatia Housing Society School and College Akmal Hossain, along with teachers of the same school, were present at the campaign.
Mr Hossain said, "The solution to the plastic pollution is the 'zero' waste approach through which it will be possible to achieve a plastic-free world."
'Brand Audit' tool is designed by the Break Free From Plastic (BFFP) global movement.
The campaign is mainly done to promote mass awareness and also create awareness among the manufacturers on safeguarding the environment from the harmful consequences of using single use plastic.
