PM approves proposal to upgrade CMC to university: Nasim

CHITTAGONG, Apr 8 (BSS): Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim today said that Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina has approved the proposal to upgrade the Chittagong Medical College (CMC) as university.

The students will be attending classes at Chittagong Medical University (CMU), the 2nd Medical University in the country, from the next session, he added.

The health Minister said Bangabandhu's Daughter Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the university before the next session.

He said all medical colleges and medical technological institutes in Chittagong division will be run under the university.

The minister made this declaration while exchanging views with local journalists at Chittagong Circuit House this afternoon.

City Awami League General Secretary AZM Nasir Uddin, Director of CMC Hospital Brigadier Shahidul Goni, Civil Surgeon of Chittagong Dr Sarfaraz Khan Babul, President of Chittagong chapter of BMA Dr Mujibal Hoq Khan, among others, were present at the views exchange meeting.

The health minister declared in the allocation for the health sector in the next fiscal, Tk 20 billion ( two thousand crore) would be increased.

"All kinds of treatment facilities including setting up of burn units will be extended in all districts in the country keeping with the commitments of the present government to reach health service in remote areas," he added.

Nasim made a clarion call to extend all out co-operation  from all sections of people to the service of the humanity side by side government's endeavor.

Nasim also expressed the hope that CMU would be a leading medical university not only in Bangladesh but also in South Asia.

He said the university will provide modern and improved treatment to the people of this region employing highly educated and distinguished doctors.
