Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina stressed Wednesday the need for flourishing science and technology-based technical and vocational education in a wider way alongside general education in the country to meet the growing job market demand, reports UNB.
"Science and technology-based technical education should have to be spread widely in the country alongside the general education so that they (students) could groom up themselves and gain financial solvency," she said.
The PM was addressing the inauguration of the Technical and Vocational Education Week 2014 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the city.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid also spoke on the occasion.
This is for the second time that the Technical and Vocational Education Week is being held in the country with the theme 'Technical and Vocational Education for facing the challenge of the 21st century.'
Sheikh Hasina said her government has been implementing various schemes so that the teenagers and youths feel more encouraged to have technical and vocational education to create more employment opportunities and thus contributing to the country's development to a great extent. "I believe our children have much more talent and they could flourish those if they get a little scope."
Mentioning that education is the only tool which could free the country from poverty, Hasina said the country's education system is being reformed so that the future generation could receive standard education.
She listed the introduction of semester system, GPA system in the country's education sector alongside upgrading the educational curriculum to international standards after assuming office in 1996.
The PM said the government is making primary education up to Class Eight so that the students would be able to decide the path for moving ahead in materialising their future goal of professions like doctors, engineers.
About the pass rate in public examinations that reached over 92 per cent, the PM said the pass rate also shot up over 98 per cent in a neighbouring country. "I think that our children are very meritorious."
She also took a swipe at talk-show panelists who often raised questions about the standard of the country's education system following the high pass rate.
Hasina said if the country's about 160 million people could be groomed up skilfully, Bangladesh would no longer lag behind and stand on its own feet.
She also highlighted various steps of her government to promote technical and vocational education with the ICT use in the country.
Later, she visited some stalls set up at the BICC marking the Technical and Vocational Education Week.
Education Secretary Dr Mohammad Sadiq delivered the address of welcome. Directorate of Technical Education Director General M Shahjahan Mia also spoke.
