Police arrested two women for their alleged involvement in stealing money from shoppers at Bashundhara City Shopping Mall in the capital. The arrestees were Juthi Akter Srabanti alias Juthi Akter Jyoti alias Lima Akter (22), and Sahnaj Begum (42). Juthi Akter was a member of an inter-district pickpocket gang.
Deputy Commissioner (DC - Media and Public Relations) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said the two women were arrested at the shopping mall on Friday (August 8). The DMP DC said a team of Tejgaon Police Station arrested the duos. The arrestees pushed a woman in front of a lift on the seventh floor of the mall, and took away Tk 40,000 from the victim's bag.
Sensing the loss, the woman and her husband screamed, and security personnel of the mall rushed to them. Hearing the incident, the security personnel nabbed the two women. Their two unidentified accomplices managed to flee the scene.
The DC further said the arrestees also confessed their involvement in stealing Tk 0.1 million, a four-gram gold ornament worth Tk 64,500, and Tk 10,000 from two other victims from the same shopping mall on the same day. With the help of women police personnel, Tk 0.15 million was also recovered from Juthi Akter's purse.
