FE REPORT | May 10, 2026 00:00:00

Four-day long 'Police Week 2026', the largest annual event of the Bangladesh Police, is set to commence today (Sunday) at Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital.

The slogan of this year's Police Week is "My Police, My Country, Bangladesh First."

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to inaugurate the colorful programme.

The premier will inspect the police parade, receiving salute from various contingents and handing over medals to 107 police personnel for their distinguished service and outstanding performance, according to police headquarters sources.

The event will bring together senior police officials, government representatives, diplomats and members of the force from across the country.

Major programmes include welfare parades, conferences, award ceremonies, PUNAK stall visits and discussions on policing reforms and modernisation.

Meanwhile, in separate messages on this occasion, President Mohammed Shahabuddin emphasised professionalism, discipline, transparency and the use of modern technologies including AI and digital forensics to tackle cybercrime, misinformation, militancy and trafficking.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stressed restoring public confidence in police, improving law and order and strengthening action against mob violence, juvenile gangs and narcotics.

Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed called on police members to uphold professionalism and public trust while ensuring innocent people are not harassed.

Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir reaffirmed the commitment to building a modern, technology-driven and people-oriented police force.

This year's parade will be commanded by Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar.

Police personnel will receive BPM, PPM, BPM-Service and PPM-Service medals for bravery, integrity, professionalism and contributions to crime control and investigation during 2025.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Police is likely to place a series of structural reform proposals before Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during the National Police Week.

The reforms proposals aim to enhance operational efficiency, professional mobility, cybercrime prevention and public security across the country. One of the key proposals focuses on introducing time and batch-based promotions for police officers to ensure career mobility and reduce dissatisfaction among different BCS police batches.

Police officials said delays in promotions due to a shortage of higher-ranking posts have created administrative stagnation.

Under the proposal, Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) would receive promotions in a structured timeline-Additional SP after 5 years, SP (Grade-5) after 10 years, Additional DIG after 14 years, DIG after 18 years and Additional IGP after 20 years of service, similar to other government cadres.
